I had actually heard one valid case for that years ago. A lady suffered from severe migraines in bright light. She had the darkest tint available, and got in trouble from the police for going darker. Although now that I think about it, I wonder why she couldn't use special sunglasses instead.

I do not currently, nor have I ever owned a Jeep you’re right about that.

But I know that trying to make a new GC look like a tough guy car with a Punisher sticker and blacked out headlights is kinda silly. Because in reality it’s a big, comfy, AWD yacht. And my AWD 328 has probably done more off-roading than most of them.

Depends what generation GC you’re talking about. The ZJ and WJ were both plenty capable because they still had solid axles and a locking center diff . They both pretty much had the same drivetrain as the TJ Wrangler. Even the 3rd gen WK was fairly capable even with IFS. When they went to the current Gen WK2 with fully independent suspension and a chassis based on a fiat then yes, it became a soft- roader. Really only suitable for driving around the city and dirt roads with about as much capability as an Outback. Also is “ pseudo" maybe proof read before posting? Your post sounds like rambling.

So, you admit that the WK1 was capable, but neglect to see the flaw in your own reasoning for the WK2.

Its NOT a Fiat platform. Ever notice it’s called WK2 and think ‘huh, maybe that’s because it’s related to the WK1?’ That’s because it is. It’s an evolution of the same platform.

An appropriately optioned GC will still run circles around any other manufacturer’s SUV except probably the  4Runner. (Probably Bronco as well when it launches)

You know a HMMWV also has fully independent suspension. Not every Jeep needs to be a Wrangler. Not every off-road path is a pile of rocks the size of basketballs and VW Beetles. Deserts exists, and so do muddy trails through the woods. On max height my ‘14 JGC Overland can traverse any rural farm path you throw at it without scratching the paint.

Of course this is Jalopnik, no one he re paid more than $15k for their current vehicle. So I understand the jealousy.

Theres a big difference between tinted and blacked out. I just got mine tinted and required them not to go too dark. Now my taillights look burgundy burgundy instead of red, they aren’t dark and most people probably couldn’t even tell they are tinted. Just see the car as looking a bit different for “some reason.” When the car is on and the lights are on you can't tell a difference from stock. People need to chill on hating taillights with any level of tint, it's just the blacked out ones that can actually impair vision for the person behind you.

You’re allowed to get illegal tint with medical exemption. Here in Colorado damn near everyone has illegal tint and not an issue (we have the second most days of sunshine out of the 50 states and people usually get their front windows to match the rear which usually sit at 15%.

Don't forget the snow. My original WK had fatty tires on it and was ready for any weather, that thing was actually rugged. I just got a WK2 and I feel like I'm in a luxury car. Much different feeling, like I don't want to "hurt" the car. But even this WK2 is better in the snow than damn near anything out there. Plus with the terrain selecter, it's no wonder why the rest of the world calls the Jeep GC the Range Rover of American cars.

I agree with you about the tough guy stickers, but in terms of doing stuff to your lights or any other customizations I'm down for that. I love when people customize their cars to match their style as I do the same, and if you're the same way then you should hate on other people's styles because they're different than yours. This is car guy culture, the next guy might not have the same mods done that YOU would do, but the respect should still be there IMO. I just got a WK2 with a 5.7L and plan on modding it quite a bit and I couldn't give a s*** if some people don't like it, just like you should mod yours to your taste, not to some random dudes taste.

Probably, but the car itself will still get you through a blizzard better than damn near anything else out there. I just switched from a WK to a WK2. I would take my WK with it’s mods over a Wrangler in a snow storm any day of the week. I live in Denver and in the past month we’ve gotten multiple feet of snow in the city so snow is my Jee ps main objective and it does it well. Grand Cherokees and Wranglers are the 2 OG Jeeps and the realest ones there are.

They’re not horrible as an overland rig. Especially with the air suspension. You’re not going to have great articulation obviously but the traction system makes up for some of that.

Im actually tempted considering the diesel version has an incredible range and my travels with kids is more about exploration than seeing how big of ruts we can get through.

Also if my kid really wants me to put a punisher sticker on it I probably will.

I agree with headlights. Taillights depend on vehicle. Our new van for instance has LED tails that will burn out your retinas, I have no issue with them being tinted.

My thing is, when it comes to lights and windows and the like, that stuff all gets federally approved, and as with building codes, _generally_ make sense. You or I might be trying to pay attention whilst we drive, but there are FREAKING MORONS out there who do not. And apart from the outlier person who has some specific need, having a windshield tinted just doesn’t strike me as a clever plan.

I can’t see tinting one’s windshield as a clever plan. I own Mylar reflective screens for all my cars, even the ancient ones, to protect the interior when it’s parked. When I’m driving? I’d like my forward view unobstructed, TYVM.

Actually, some people do tint their windows for medical reasons like eyestrain . My state has a special license plate to indicate your windows are tinted for such reason. :)

My sister in law has some well to do friends who visited awhile ago.

Like they are in their early 20s own a 6 bedroom home, and 4 brand new cars well to do. And no they did not make that money on their own. 

They visited a while ago and repeatedly called their fully loaded Ford Explorer “the truck”. My wife and I looked at each other and giggled almost every time.
